“Did they catch him? Did Reaper find the people responsible?” I ask. I’m fucking livid after hearing what she went through. God, she must have been terrified.

“No. He tried. It’s pretty quiet. I don’t know if what I went through was someone doing it for the first time, and they got cold feet when I escaped or what, but I’ve been safe here. Reaper does everything he can to protect me, so you see why this can’t happen.”

“I’m sorry, Flower, but I don’t see why this can’t happen. He protected you like a brother should but stopping you from living your life isn’t what people are supposed to do. I’m sure he is scared to lose you, but losing you and you doing something else? Like I said, two different things. And I doubt the guy that did this to you is a first-timer. I bet anything he moved so they wouldn’t find anything.”

“So you think he is still out there?” her voice quivers, and I wrap her in my arms, keeping her safe and grounded.

“I’m not ever going to lie you, but yeah, I think he is still out there, and I think he is still doing to other girls what he did to you. I’ll find him, Flower. I swear.” My cheek presses against her chest, her heart strong as it steadily beats.

Ba-bum, ba-bum, ba-bum.

It’s calming. I haven’t felt this much peace inside myself since… ever. Even with Heather, it never felt this good. I let out a sigh, relaxing into her as she takes off my beanie and runs her fingers through my hair.

“Thank you for telling me the truth,” she says.

“Don’t thank me for something that should come natural.”

“Your turn,” she says. “Keep your end of the bargain.”

I sigh, push off her, and fall to my back. I fold an arm behind my head. This time she lays on my chest and even though she fights me, fights this, there is no way we can stay away from each other. What we feel is meant to be felt.

“I was in the Army. I was on patrol and we hit an IED. It was bad, the wreckage. I lost two friends that day. One, his head was cut clean off. My other friend had internal injuries as well as a door impaled on his legs. He asked me to kill him. Begged me. He wanted to die on his terms, and he wanted it to be by me. And I did, and even though I know it’s what he needed, I still blame myself. I did it because I loved him. He was my best friend. So that’s my pain. I carry that with me every day.”

“Oh, Thrasher,” she whispers, petting her hand against my cheek. I didn’t shave today, so I can hear the whiskers rubbing against her.

“It wasn’t your fault. I’m so sorry.”

“I know,” I gulp. “I know that, but it doesn’t make nights easier. I have fucked up dreams. I nearly choked Ink to death thinking he was the enemy when he tried to wake me up.
